Water Music: Chamber Music for the River City May 18-21, 2012
Join CMSCVA for four concerts of fabulous chamber music with a twist – every piece on these concerts was inspired by water, from the oceans to rivers, from rain to tears. Our festival features violinists Diane Pascal, Diana Cohen (concertmaster of the Richmond Symphony) and Fiona Hughes, flutist Mary Boodell, violist Max Mandel, pianist Rieko Aizawa, pianist and harpsichordist Carsten Schmidt, and cellist James Wilson.
Water Music: On the River Friday, May 18 7:30 pm, First Unitarian Church The "Water Music" festival opens with a concert of chamber music inspired by rivers and the creatures that live in them - Smetana’s "The Moldau," Handel’s "Water Music" Suite in G major, "Reflets dans l'eau" by Debussy, and Schubert’s famous piano quintet nicknamed "The Trout."
Free Concert - Legends Saturday, May 19 12 noon, Richmond Main Public Library Our festival continues with a concert depicting five watery legends, featuring pianists Rieko Aizawa and Carsten Schmidt, violinist Diana Cohen, and flutist Mary Boodell - Reinecke’s “Undine” sonata, Wagner’s "Flying Dutchman," Debussy’s "Sunken Cathedral," “The Fountain of Arethuse” by Szymanowski, and “The Castle by the Sea” by Richard Strauss.
Water Music: Rain Saturday, May 19 7:30 pm, First Unitarian Church The "Water Music" festival continues with "Rain," a concert of Baroque and Romantic chamber music inspired by storms and raindrops - Beethoven's viola quintet, Chopin's "Raindrop" prelude, and stormy music by Vivaldi and Rameau.
Water Music: Toward the Sea Monday, May 21 7:30 pm, First Unitarian Church Our "Water Music" festival comes to a majestic conclusion with "Toward the Sea," a concert of chamber music inspired by the oceans - Mendelssohn's "Hebrides" overture, the violin sonata in G major by Brahms, Donizetti's overture to "Alina," and George Crumb's "Voice of the Whale."
